It’s time to talk wig maintenance girls! We all love a natural looking wig, especially those that stand the test of time. Wigs can become very expensive, so it’s in our best interest to discuss ways we can take care of them. You want to get the best bang for your buck right? Great!
I will discuss 9 ways in which you can maintain the same natural and full looking wig months later, as if you had just purchased it today. Lets get started.
1. WEAR YOUR WIG LESS FREQUENTLY
The less you wear your wig, the longer it will last, and that goes for anything. The more you wash your favorite pair of black jeans, the more likely they will begin to fade.
I would suggest putting multiple wigs into rotation. Switch it up a bit. New day, new wig…who you vibes? Now don’t get me wrong. I am not saying that you can’t wear the same wig everyday, as I have my personal favorites too. It would just be a good idea to rotate your wigs, so that you can give your favorite wig a little TLC from time to time.
2. WASH YOUR WIG…BUT NOT TOO OFTEN
In order to maintain your wigs natural luster, you should wash it every few days, instead of everyday. Just like with your natural hair, if you wash your wig too often, it may become dry, brittle and dull. And this goes for both synthetic and human hair wigs alike.
Rotate your wigs often, so that there’s more time in between washing your wigs.
3. INVEST IN QUALITY PRODUCTS TO MAINTAIN YOUR WIGS
Every shampoo and conditioner on the market does not work the same. Traditional shampoos and conditioners have harsh chemicals that can permanently damage your wig, and it’s important to remember that your wig hair is unable to repair itself over time like our natural hair can.
Using products that are designed for wigs is key in your wigs longevity. Let us know below what your favorite products are.
4. PROPER WIG WASHING TECHNIQUES
They way in which you wash your natural hair is not the same way you should wash your wig. I will give you a step-by-step technique to follow for proper wig washing. See following:
STEP 1: Soak your wig in soapy water for a few minutes. Then gently comb the shampoo through the hair. Do not rub or massage the product into the wig as that will result in residue buildup, which clumps your wig hair and possibly cause permanent damage.
STEP 2: Gently rinse the wig in clean, warm water and comb through. Repeat this process until all the soap is rinsed from the hair.
STEP 3: Repeat steps 1 and 2, but with your conditioner, instead of shampoo.
STEP 4: Immediately detangle your wig with a detangling brush afterwards.
STEP 5: Air dry your hair, as the hot air from a blow-dryer will permanently damage the human hair of a wig and even melt the synthetic wig.
5. “HAIR DRYERS, AND CURLING IRONS, AND FLAT IRONS, OH MY!”
Just as heating tooling can cause heat damage to your natural hair, same is true for wigs. Heating tools causes your wig to become dry, brittle, dull, and creates split ins. And as stated before, unlike human hair, wig hair is unable to repair itself from heat damage.
Remember, you can customize your wig prior to its arrival at your doorstep. This way you can pre-style it the way you’d like, leaving you less need to manipulate it’s form yourself. Always air dry your wig and when styling your hair wig curls, utilized non-heating curlers/rollers.
I know it’s old fashion, but you’ll thank me in the long run.
6. ASK YOUR STYLIST!
What you don’t know, ask your stylist. Your stylist should be able to give you tips and tricks for maintaining and styling your wig without damaging it.

7. DO NOT SLEEP WITH YOUR WIG
If you thought bed head was bad, then you don’t want to experience wig bed head. Always remove your wig before bed to prevent tangling and matting.
A Styrofoam head is to your wig, as a pillow is to your head.
8. KEEP YOUR WIG COVERED AND IN AN UPRIGHT POSITION
When you aren’t wearing your wig, make sure it is stored appropriately. Store your wig in a cool atmosphere. Try to keep it in an upright position to prevent from tangling. You can do this by placing it on a Styrofoam head. I sometimes keep wigs or hair extensions in their original packaging to protect the wig from dust and exposure.
9. WIGS ARE NO EXCUSE TO NEGLECT YOUR NATURAL HAIR
We saved the best for last! Maintaining clean hair and a healthy scalp will help prevent residues, oils, and grease from seeping into your wig. You don’t want to walk around with a greasy, stiff wig do you? I didn’t think, so. Clean your natural hair often, to increase the natural look of your wig.
